They raced each other’s cars, many of them Ford models, on weekend afternoons out in the country on makeshift dirt tracks. To elude federal Prohibition agents, sheriffs and cops on the road, these daring “runners” needed sharp driving skills to speed and maneuver along dirt, gravel, single-lane, and occasionally, paved roads after dark and at times with their headlights turned off.Įven before Prohibition came to an end in 1933, racing these high-performance cars became a popular pastime among the “runners” in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia and elsewhere in the South.

The idea was fairly simple – take a car that looked ordinary on the outside, modify the engine for greater speed, remove the floor boards, passenger and back seats to store as many cases of liquor as possible, install extra suspension springs to handle the weight, a dirt-protecting plate in front of the radiator and run the prohibited booze to customers by outsmarting or outrunning the authorities. Former Georgia moonshine runner “Lightening” Lloyd Seay makes a thrilling turn in his 1939 “Silver Bullet” Ford on his way to winning a stock car race at Dayton Beach, Florida, on August 24, 1941, seven years before NASCAR started. He won three pre-NASCAR, unofficial “championships” in 1939, 19, and competed in NASCAR-sanctioned races in the late 1940s and the 1950s. Bill France, a stock race contemporary of Seay and who would set up NASCAR in 1948, described Seay as the finest stock car driver he ever witnessed. In 1941, he won three races over just 15 days in North Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Seay started racing stock cars at age 19. As a teenager in the post-Prohibition 1930s, he used fast cars to run (untaxed) illegal moonshine from stills on backcountry roads in Georgia.
“Lightening” Lloyd Seay, was born in Georgia on December 14, 1919, just more than a month before Prohibition started.
